Paddington evening classes
Summer’s over and the nights are drawing in. But instead of thinking of going into hibernation, embrace autumn as the season for change by learning something new at local evening or lunchtime classes.
1. Pottery painting
129 Shirland Road, W9 2EP
Local studio Arty Club is hosting free lunchtime sessions at Paddington Central on 24 October and 15 November, to introduce the basics of pottery painting. Paint something for yourself or create a unique gift for a friend. Pick a piece of pottery, choose the colours you want to use and let your creativity take over.
If you can’t make the Paddington Central sessions, the usual price is £4.90 per painter to use the studio, plus pottery pieces costing £6–£20.
2. Ballroom and Latin American dance
1 Chilworth Mews, W2 3RG
Fans of hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing who want to swap the sofa for salsa should head down to Dance Art in Paddington. Lunchtime or evening lessons in all forms of ballroom and Latin American dance – including the waltz, foxtrot, tango and quickstep to the rumba, samba, jive and cha cha cha – are on offer for all ages and abilities.
For complete beginners, classes are on Mondays at 19.30–20.30. A four-week course costs £48. And don’t worry if you’re alone in feeling the rhythm in your feet – no partner is required!
3. DIY car maintenance
25 Paddington Green, London W2 1NB
New evening courses for adults at City of Westminster College’s Paddington Green Campus in 2017 include everything from nutrition, astronomy and jewellery design to bookkeeping, public speaking and car maintenance.
The 10-week car maintenance course is on Thursday evenings (18.00–21.00) and costs £399. Topics covered include servicing and maintenance of lubrication systems, cooling systems, braking systems, transmission systems, electrical systems, wheels and tyres.
4. Creative writing
Reckon you’ve got the next Harry Potter brewing in your imagination? Get some expert advice on how to start a new chapter in your life through evening lessons in creative writing at the London School of Journalism.
The nine-week course, beginning 4th October and costing £365, explores the techniques of writing fiction through examples, writing exercises and discussion. Topics include writing in first- and third-person voices, character creation and development, plus setting your location.
126 Shirland Road, London W9 2BT
5. Steelpan skills
32 Woodfield Road, W9 2BE
Got a youngster who fancies playing a percussion instrument, but you don’t want to suffer through the early days of practise? Then classes in steelpan (aka steel drums) at Paddington Arts could be for you.
Tuesday is steelpan day at Paddington Arts, an organisation committed to developing talent and creativity in the community. There are evening steelpan classes for kids aged six to 15.
For adults, aged up to 26, try the weekly Wu Shu Kwan Chinese Boxing or dance classes. A £20 annual membership fee entitles you to take part in all open-workshop classes at Paddington Arts.
